March 2007 Block Grants Funds UpdateOn March 16, 2007 the Allocation Amounts by district for the California Block Grant funds of $500 Million for the Arts and Physical Education will be released. These funds represent an important one-time opportunity to invest in physical education and visual and performing arts instructional programs. Funds may be used for professional development, equipment, and supplies for physical education and visual and performing arts in kindergarten through grade twelve. California Department of Education Project Funding Physical Education Teacher Incentive Funding K-8 Funds support ongoing incentive grants for school districts to hire more credentialed physical education teachers in elementary and middle schools, kindergarten through grade eight. The purpose of the program is to help address the rising incidence of obesity and its effects by ensuring that schools have trained experts to provide the required number of instructional minutes in physical education. The funds are to be used to hire credentialed staff to help kids develop healthy life-long exercise habits.

The Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve represent the essential skills and knowledge that all students need to maintain a physically active, healthy lifestyle. Education Code section 51210 requires 200 minutes of physical education every 10 school days for students in grades one through six, and Education Code Section 51222 provides for 400 minutes of physical education every 10 school days for students in grades seven through twelve.
The 1994 Physical Education Framework is currently under revision. The 1994 Framework describes a sequential, developmental, age-appropriate physical education program designed to provide students with the knowledge and ability needed to maintain an active, healthy life-style.
